Could anyone advise of the best way (for septic system, environment, etc. and so on) to dispose of old liquor. I have a few moldy bottles of wine, vermouth and gin. |

Alcoholic beverages are organic, and in the small quantities we generally have in our homes, pose no threat to the environment or the sewage system. You can safely pour them down the drain to dispose of them; the large quantities of water flowing through the water treatment systems will safely dilute them to harmless levels. Alcohol will also evaporate when exposed to air, making it easier to remove from the water supply. The other organic components will be treated and removed the same way that vegetable peelings sent through the garbage disposal are treated.
If you have a septic tank, you may want to dispose of these liquids in small doses each day, so that the alcohol remains diluted and does not kill the helpful bacteria that live there and process the waste. |
