I'm including one (two, if you count locations) grocery store in this list, because in my opinion it's on a par with the local wine shops in price and availability.
Marcello's Wine Market
3911 Perkins Road
Baton Rouge, LA 70808
(225) 344-1414

A good place to start any wine search in BR. Decent selection & prices. Other liquors are also available at this location. This location also has the "fine wine room."
Marcello's Wine Warehouse
3202 S Sherwood Forest Blvd.
Baton Rouge, LA
(225) 295-9463
As of 1/18/2005, going out of business sale--20% off on mixed cases! It's going fast, folks! Buy now or all that will be left is the malt beverage masquerading as champagne.
Calandro's Supermarket
4142 Government St.
Baton Rouge, LA 70806-5809
(225) 383-7815

The original location, this store has less space than the Perkins store. Both stores have their own buyers, so their selections differ. Both locations offer the best selection of cheeses I've found so far in Baton Rouge; they vary according to the location, but if you're looking for triple-cream brie or Tallegio cheese from Italy, a Calandro's is the place to start.
Calandro's Supermarket
12732 Perkins Road
Baton Rouge , LA 70810

This larger location may have slightly more selection than the other. I prefer shopping here just because it's easier to find things. I find that Marcello's and Calandro's are about equally likely to have (or not to have) an item I'm looking for.
Bottavino World Wines
566 Lobdell Ave
Baton Rouge, LA 70801-6316
(225) 201-9080
I haven't actually been here before. In fact, I'm wondering if they even exist at all. I drove past their address, and didn't see any shops there--just a bar with a different name. Called the phone number and got an answering machine. I'll continue to investigate.
Wine & Cheese Shop
7655 Jefferson Hwy
Baton Rouge, LA
(225) 926-8847

Don't let the name fool you--they don't actually have cheese. They used to, but stopped after 9/11 when importing fresh cheeses became more difficult. I guess they didn't want to change the name. They do have a little deli-type lunch area offering sandwiches and salads. Their wine selection is small, but choice. |
